THE CHALLENGE

Marks & Spencer launched Plan A in January 2007, with 100 commitments to achieve in five years. The retailer recently extended the plan to 180 commitments by 2015, working with customers and suppliers on climate change, waste reduction, sustainable raw materials, trading ethically, and helping customers enjoy healthier lifestyles. The retailer hired Words&Pictures to help inspire employees in support offices with changes they could make, not just at work, but in their home lives too.

THE CO-DEVELOPED SOLUTION

A ‘genuinely digital magazine’ emerged combining the best elements of web presentations and social media with powerful editorial content. The flash-based solution with Twitter-style rolling commentaries, blogs and a daily quiz, focuses less on ‘pledges’ and more on offering inspiring, practical case studies based on colleague interviews.
